about

Composer Notes-

Envisage means to contemplate or conceive of as a possibility, or a desirable future event, and form a mental picture of (something not yet existing or known). I chose the french translation of this word, Envisager, as the title of this piece for mostly sonic reasons (I liked the rhythm and the way it flowed) but also as a reference or tribute to the tape music of musique concrète, the French electroacoustic music of the mid 20th century.
This piece is supposed to interpret the thought process of what it takes to be a successful musician, composer, and human being. The form is supposed to represent the thought loop I go through with my fear and doubts as a musician: starting with certainty and fluidity, then it becoming more disorienting and fearful, turning then to skeptical, and finally returning to a centered and tranquil ending, and looping back around to that flowing certainty you get from the introduction.
Many of these samples have direct relations to thoughts or events that have recently filled my mind. One example is the metallic percussive pattern, in the beginning of the piece, is played on a old rusted propane tank, welded with nuts and bolts on it to look like a pig; as well equipped with wings(when pigs fly), which gives the sound its relevance to my uncertainty of becoming successful. Other sounds include a percussion pattern made by iPhone sounds through effects processing, a sitar sample (more noticeable at the end and more masked in effects in the beginning) because I have studied Indian raga music for the last few months, a broom sweeping representing my never ending struggle of balancing organization and cleanliness while being engulfed by music writing, and the sounds of feet walking through different elements (the forest and leaves/beach and sand) representing the ever changing journey we as humans go through in our being.
This piece was my first attempt of writing a piece without melody or text interpreting the concept, which was a refreshing new way of composing for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed collecting and creating the sounds for this piece.
