about

This piece would have never been possible without my good friend and amazing musician Quinn Mason. A huge thanks to you my brother.

Quin Mason- alto saxophone
Dylan Banks- piano, percussion, modular synthesis, computer electronics

Composer notes:
It is quite amazing (and humorous sometimes) some of the sounds film composers use to show sounds of things that are not making that sound, or any sound at all. For example, the way a laser “shoots” through space, or the grass growing in the popular tv documentary, Planet Earth. These things indeed carry no sound, but composers find a way to imitate what they imagine it could sound like. So I wanted to give a whirl at an improvisation piece that touched on creating and interpreting sounds to specific images: thus spawning Organic Inclination. This piece is written for 2 performers and can be any instrumentation. I selected four images that I feel would be good to represent for interpretation: the sun, the double helix, a brain, and a tunnel. Next, I gave a few points to touch on for each image, whether it be about their formation, personality, general characteristics or theoretical ideas. The performers of the piece then find a way musically to imitate these, calling for each player to familiarize themselves with these found objects on each picture, and to know their characteristics and background. Hopefully the listener can obtain the correlation of the picture and sonic imitation, but I hope that this improvisation leaves the audience with a feeling of uncertainty as well. I feel that we all might agree that a specific sound, frequency, or timbre would fit well with an image, but may also differ in ones own interpretation musically.
